About Me

My name is DeAnna Welch, and I am the owner of Rediscovering Real. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and have a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Colorado at Denver. I was one of the first people in UCD history to graduate with an emphasis in Multicultural and Diversity Counseling. I also have a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

I have lived in Colorado for more than 25 years, and am grateful to call it my second home. I am happily married and have two tween children. In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, eating delicious food, and listening to music.

What is Multicultural Counseling?

Multicultural counseling looks at how larger societal factors affect how we experience the world. It recognizes that we all have multiple characteristics that make up our identity. Our age, race, sex, appearance, occupation, gender expression, ability level, political affiliation, sexual orientation--these are just some of the things that help us to understand who we are. They also influence how other people perceive us.

These parts of our identity should not be off-limits in therapy sessions, nor should they be treated as if they don't matter. Multicultural counseling allows us to safely and honestly explore how the problems we bring to therapy relate to these parts of ourselves.
